Signed Vicke Lindstrand Vintage Kosta Crystal Bears & Glacier. Superb hand formed Lindstrand crystal artwork from the 1950's. Signed with Lindstand's mark "Kosta, V.L. 19". Other than one small nick/chip on side (please see pics . . hard to see unless you look close), this piece is in excellent condition.

Measures 3.5" in width and 3.5" in height.

Background on Vicke Lindstrand:

Legendary Swedish designer Vicke Lindstrand began his career at glass manufacturers Orrefors in 1928, were he worked independently alongside Edward Hald and Simon Gate. He made his debut as designer at the Stockholm World Fair in 1930, w he presented twelve glass vases with enamel decor in exotic patterns. For this, he received great attention from international design publications. Lindstrand added new artistic dimensions to the already famous Orrefors glass with his unique designs and revitalization of classic forms and techniques. During his time at Orrefors he worked on engraved glass and Graal vases. With sculptor Edvin Öhrström he developed the new Ariel technique.
Orrefors could not afford to keep Lindstrand during the war and between 1943 and 1950 he became creative leader at Uppsala Ekeby, working with ceramic. During this period he designed many different stoneware objects ranging from pots to figural sculptures.
After this brief flirt with ceramics he went back to glass at Kosta in the 1950's, now as a mature artist. He was the dominant artist at the factory and made numerous classic vases t At Kosta, Lindstrand started to use more colors in his glass designs. From this period he leaves icons such as "Trees in the Fog" and "Autumn". Lindstrand stayed with Kosta for 23 years.

ORREFORS VICKE LINDSTRAND'S GLASS IN FREAK HANSEN

Before Lindstrand was a star for Kosta, he was a star for Orrefors.  This is one of his modernist designs for Orrefors, a heavy ,signed and stickered rectangular bowl that looks as if it was carved out of ice with an adze.  It's similar to the Venini "battuto" (beaten) style.  It has then been treated with acid to give it even more of a frosted look.

Lindstrand left Orrefors in 1940 for a variety of reasons, including an offer of work in America.  He was bound by a formal agreement that he would not work in glass for the next ten years. The outbreak of the Second World War stopped him leaving Sweden so he worked in the design of ceramics as artistic director of Uppsala Ekeby Keramik until 1950.  At the end of his enforced 10 year break there was a fierce bidding war for his services.  Lindstrand went back to glass design at Kosta in 1950 and led a dramatic revival of Kosta's fortunes.  He reused this carved ice technique, as I'll show in a later listing.

3 BEAUTIFULL HOLMEGAARD GLASS BY JACOB BANG IN FREAK HANSEN

• Beautiful German inspired form in high quality crystal with just a hint of sapphire blue.  The sapphire twinkles and glitters according to the thickness of the glass and the current lighting.  Rare color projects wealth and elegance.
• Designed by the infamous Jacob Bang for Holmegaard, Denmark in 1928.  Circa 1930s-1940s. This color, usually seen on Strombergshyttan/Orrefors (Sweden) forms, was popular during the Swedish Modern decor craze of the mid-20th Century. 
• The 'Kutrolf' style evolved from the 16th-17th century German design of twisted multi-tubed drinking vessels and bottles meant to 'trick' the user.  Kutrolf bottles were sometimes marked "skill required' to use.  At the beginning of the 20th Century, the modern form became less 'tricky'.  The twists were illiminated. You do not need skill to pour from this decanter.  In fact, the tubes on today's version of the Kutrolf help ariate, give a good hand-grip, and provide a smoother flow.  The 'gurgle' sound remains and has been dubbed 'Cluck Cluck' or 'Kluk Kluk' by mid-century modern makers.
• This decanter has an old 'isenkraemmer imerco' sticker on the center of the base.  This is a Dansk label, a prolific distributor of Scandinavian decor since the early 20th Century.
• Quality crystal was hand-blown and hand-tooled to form.  Pontil mark is an acid polished half-moon.  Stopper and bottle necks are ground to fit.  Exceptionally clean.  Immaculate. No signs of use or water remnants.  Some bottom-wear on base caused by years of surface contact and is expected. Measures 10" tall to top of stopper, widest point is 4½", base circumference is 15".  Weighs 2 lbs. Great for the bar that has everything!
